Ostrea aviculiformis was named by Anderson (1905). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is CAS 66747 - Alcalde Hills [Domengine Sandstone], which is in a Ypresian marine sandstone in the Domengine Formation of California.
It was recombined as Gryphaeostrea aviculiformis by Moore (1987) and Squires (2018).
