Sordes was named by Sharov (1971). Its type is Sordes pilosus.
It was assigned to Dimorphodontidae by Sharov (1971); to Rhamphorhynchidae by Carroll (1988); to Breviquartossa by Andres et al. (2010); to Lonchognatha by Andres et al. (2014); and to Scaphognathinae by Bakhurina and Unwin (1995), Unwin and Bakhurina (2000), Unwin (2003), Carpenter et al. (2003) and Lu et al. (2015).
