Pachydermophyllum was named by Thomas and Bose (1955). Its type is Pachydermophyllum papillosum.

It was assigned to Pteridospermophyta by Andrews (1970); and to Peltaspermaceae by Thomas and Bose (1955) and Retallack (1981).
