Huanhepterus was named by Dong (1982). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Gnathosaurinae by Unwin (2002) and Unwin (2003); to Ctenochasmatidae by Dong (1982), Carroll (1988), Howse and Milner (1995), Andres and Ji (2008) and Wang and Dong (2008); and to Lophocratia by Andres et al. (2014).
