Herrerasaurus was named by Reig (1963). It is the type genus of Herrerasauridae, Herrerasauridae.

It was assigned to Gryponichidae by Tatarinov (1964); to Palaeopoda by Reig (1970); to Anchisauridae by Steel (1970); to Palaeosauriscidae by Colbert (1970); to Theropoda by Demathieu (1970); to Theropoda by Bakker and Galton (1974) and Galton and Cluver (1976); to Saurischia by Reig (1963), Bonaparte (1966), Bonaparte (1973), Galton (1973), Bonaparte (1978) and Anderson and Cruickshank (1978); to Herrerasauridae by Van Heerden (1978); to Coelurosauria by Bonaparte (1984); to Staurikosauridae by Paul (1988); and to Herrerasauridae by Battail (1986), Carroll (1988) and Sues (1990).
Frenguellisaurus was named by Novas (1986). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Herrerasaurus by Novas (1994), Novas (1997), Rauhut (2003), Langer (2004), Langer and Benton (2006), Alcober and Martínez (2010) and Langer et al. (2010).

It was assigned to Theropoda by Novas (1986); to Herrerasauridae by Paul (1988); and to Staurikosauridae by Olshevsky (1991).
