Cribrospongia was named by d'Orbigny (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Cribrospongiidae.

It was assigned to Hexactinosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cribrospongiidae by Finks et al. (2004).
