Taxonomy
Mussaurus was named by Bonaparte and Vince (1979). Its type is Mussaurus patagonicus. It was considered monophyletic by Otero and Pol (2013).
It was assigned to Mussauridae by Bonaparte and Vince (1979); to Anchisauridae by Carroll (1988); to Plateosauridae by Novas (1997) and Galton and Upchurch (2004); to Sauropodomorpha by Upchurch et al. (2007); to Anchisauria by Otero and Pol (2012); and to Sauropodiformes by Otero and Pol (2013) and McPhee et al. (2015).
