Farrea was named by Bowerbank (1862) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u R]. It is extant. Its type is Farrea occa. It is the type genus of Farreidae.

It was assigned to Hexactinosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Farreidae by Rigby and Albi (1996) and Reid (2004).
