Hormathospongia was named by Rigby et al. (1996) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Hormathospongia dictyota.

It was assigned to Farreidae by Rigby et al. (1996); and to Hexactinosa by Sepkoski (2002).
