Taxonomy
Hyolithus micans was named by Billings (1871). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Hyolithellus.

It was recombined as Hyolithes micans by Billings (1871); it was recombined as Hyolithellus micans by Gravestock et al. (2001), Demidenko (2001), Landing et al. (2002), Skovsted (2006), Landing et al. (2008) and Kouchinsky et al. (2017); it was recombined as Discinella micans by Skovsted and Topper (2018).
