Helicosphaera neolophota was named by Barron et al. (1984). Its type specimen is USNM 347046, a test, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Camino Diablo Road, which is in a Lutetian/Bartonian marine shale in the Kellogg Formation of California.
