Rentoniinae was named by Crowson (1966). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Rentoniidae by Gimmel et al. (2019) and Cai et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Trogossitidae by Lawrence and Newton (1995); and to Cleroidea by Gimmel et al. (2019) and Cai et al. (2022).
