Henodontidae was named by von Huene (1936). It is not extant. Its type is Henodus.

It was reranked as the subfamily Henodontinae by Kuhn (1946).

It was assigned to Placodontidae by Kuhn (1946); to Henodontida by Kuhn (1971); to Placodontia by Carroll (1988); to Cyamodontida by Rieppel (2000); and to Cyamodontida by Miguel Chaves et al. (2018).
