Eporeodon trigonocephalus parvus

Taxonomy

Eporeodon trigonocephalus parvus was named by Thorpe (1921) [named as a subspecies of E. trigonocephalus by Thorpe 1921; raised to species level]. Its type specimen is YPM 12425 and is a 3D body fossil. It is the type subspecies of Paroreodon.

It was recombined as Eporeodon parvus by Thorpe (1937); it was recombined as Epigenetochoerus parvus by Schultz and Falkenbach (1968); it was recombined as Paroreodon parvus by Lander (1998), Stevens and Stevens (2007) and Stevens et al. (2023).

Synonyms

Oreodontoides (Paroreodon) stocki was named by Schultz and Falkenbach (1947). Its type specimen is CIT 537, a partial skull ( Skull (somewhat crushed) with P(alv.)-M3), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Paroreodon parvus by Lander and Lindsay (2011) and Stevens et al. (2023).
Oreodontoides stocki was named by Schultz and Falkenbach (1947) [subgenus Paroreodon].

It was synonymized subjectively with Paroreodon parvus by Lander (1998).
Paroreodon marshi was named by Thorpe (1921) [genotype]. Its type specimen is YPM 12415, a partial skull (Partial skull with I2-P2 rt. and P3-M3 (M1-M3 br.) (Skull lacking postoccipital wings, zygomata, glenoid surface, and postglenoid process)), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Oreodontoides (Paroreodon) marshi by Schultz and Falkenbach (1947); it was synonymized subjectively with Paroreodon parvus by Lander (1998), Lander and Lindsay (2011) and Stevens et al. (2023).

Diagnosis

M. S. Stevens et al. 2023	Most primitive member of the Ticholeptus lineage, and generally proportioned like Eporeodon, but slightly smaller, and with a more deeply retracted nasal notch and robust glenoids, as in Ticholeptus.
