Zanthopsis carolinensis was named by Rathbun (1935). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Creston, which is in an Eocene marine horizon in South Carolina.
It was recombined as Neozanthopsis carolinensis by Schweitzer (2003) and Schweitzer et al. (2010).
