Cancer punctulatus was named by Desmarest (1822). It is the type species of Harpactocarcinus.
It was recombined as Harpactocarcinus punctulatus by Milne-Edwards (1862), Bittner (1883), Lörenthey (1898), Via (1959), Via (1991), Schweitzer (2003), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Beschin et al. (2013) and Beschin et al. (2015).
