Varanosaurus was named by Broili (1904). It is not extant. Its type is Varanosaurus acutirostris.
It was assigned to Poliosauridae by Case (1907) and Hay (1930); to Pelycosauria by Reisz (1986); to Pelycosauria by Carroll (1988); and to Ophiacodontidae by Romer and Price (1940) and Benson (2012).
