Pterodactyli was named by Meyer (1830).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pterosauria by Zittel (1890); it was reranked as the suborder Pterodactyli by Gadow (1898); it was reranked as the order Pterodactyla by Perrier (1928).

It was assigned to Ornithosauri by Fitzinger (1843); to Saurii by Meyer (1845); and to Pterosauria by Gadow (1898) and Perrier (1928).
