Polyopesia was named by Schrammen (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant K Sn Sepkoski's reference number: 622]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Hexactinosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cribrospongiidae by Finks et al. (2004).
