Taxonomy
Promerycochoerus pygmyus was named by Loomis (1924).

It was recombined as Promerycochoerus vantasselensis pygmaeus by Thorpe (1937); it was recombined as Promerycochoerus (Pseudopromerycochoerus) minor pygmyus by Schultz and Falkenbach (1949); it was synonymized subjectively with Promerycochoerus minor by Macdonald (1963) and Macdonald (1970); it was recombined as Eporeodon pygmyus by Lander (1998).
