Taxonomy
Lycaenodon was named by Broom (1925). Its type is Lycaenodon longiceps. It was considered monophyletic by Sidor (2003).
It was assigned to Ictidorhinidae by Carroll (1988); to Hipposauridae by Sigogneau-Russell (1989); and to Biarmosuchia by Sidor (2003), Rubidge et al. (2006), Sidor and Rubidge (2006) and Smith et al. (2006).
