Hipposaurus was named by Haughton (1929).
It was assigned to Gorgonopsia by Broom (1948); to Ictidorhinidae by Boonstra (1952); to Hipposauridae by Boonstra (1969), Carroll (1988) and Sigogneau-Russell (1989); and to Biarmosuchia by Rubidge et al. (2006), Sidor and Rubidge (2006), Smith et al. (2006) and Sidor and Smith (2007).
