Strophomena acanthoptera was named by Whiteaves (1891). Its type specimen is GSC 5779 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Stropheodonta acanthoptera by Schuchert (1897); it was recombined as Brachyprion acanthopterus by Stearn (1956); it was recombined as Megastrophia (Eomegastrophia) acanthoptera by Jin et al. (1993).
