Lycaenops was named by Broom (1925). It is not extant. Its type is Lycaenops ornatus.
It was assigned to Gorgonopsidae by Carroll (1988); to Gorgonopsinae by Sigogneau-Russell (1989); and to Hyaenidae by Werdelin and Peigne (2010).
