Sauroctonus was named by Bystrow (1955). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Gorgonopsidae by Carroll (1988); to Gorgonopsinae by Sigogneau-Russell (1989) and Battail and Surkov (2000); and to Scylacopinae by Ivakhnenko (2003).
