Nothosaurus cristatus was named by Hinz et al. (2019) [Medium-sized Nothosaurus with a skull length of at least 383 mm; postfrontal and maxilla meet behind the orbit, forming its posterior margin; postorbital excluded from the orbit; jugal long, slender, and almost reaching the orbital margin; parietals fused and forming a pronounced, sharp ridge along the midline anterior to the large parietal foramen; ectopterygoid large with long, slender posterior extension.]. Its type specimen is GPIT/RE/09800, a skull (Almost complete skull, lacking mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Nothosaurus cristatus-type locality, which is in a Ladinian marine marl in the Erfurt Formation of Germany.
