Tritylodontoidea was named by Simpson (1928). It was considered monophyletic by Waldman and Savage (1972).

It was reranked as the infraorder Tritylodontoidea by Waldman and Savage (1972); it was reranked as the superfamily Tritylodontoidea by Tatarinov (2008).

It was assigned to Multituberculata by Simpson (1928), Simpson (1929) and Huene (1940); to Therapsida by Waldman and Savage (1972); to Eucynodontia by Carroll (1988); and to Cynognathia by Tatarinov (2008).

G. G. Simpson 1928Multituberculata having upper molars quadrate, with three rows of two to four cusps each. Cheek teeth little differentiated, at least five molariform teeth of identical pattern, no trenchant premolars. Lachrymals and frontals large. Long narrow palate without vacuities and with choanae far forward.
