Tritylodon was named by Owen (1884). It is the type genus of Tritylodontidae.
It was assigned to Allotheria by Marsh (1889); to Gomphognathidae by Perrier (1928); and to Tritylodontidae by Marsh (1889), Lydekker (1894), Simpson (1928), Simpson (1929), Huene (1940) and Carroll (1988).
