Taxonomy
Therioherpeton was named by Bonaparte and Barberena (1975). Its type is Therioherpeton cargnini.

It was assigned to Chiniquodontidae by Carroll (1988); to Therioherpetidae by Bonaparte and Barberena (2001) and Oliveira (2006); and to Prozostrodontia by Martinelli et al. (2017).
