Tritheledon was named by Broom (1930). Its type is Tritheledon riconoi. It is the type genus of Tritheledontidae.

It was assigned to Theriodontia by Haughton (1924); to Ictidosauria by Broom (1930); and to Tritheledontidae by Broom (1912) and Carroll (1988).
