Archaeornithes was named by Gadow (1893).

It was synonymized subjectively with Saururae by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Archornithes by Jaekel (1911); it was synonymized subjectively with Saururae by Hay (1930); it was reranked as the superorder Archaeornithes by Livezey and Zusi (2007).

It was assigned to Aves by Gadow (1898), Wetmore (1960), Thulborn (1975), Walker (1981) and Carroll (1988); and to Palaeoaves by Livezey and Zusi (2007).
