Pedeticosauridae was named by Van Hoepen (1915). Its type is Pedeticosaurus.

It was assigned to Ornithosuchoidea by Kuhn (1964); to Sphenosuchoidea by Kuhn (1966); to Pseudosuchia by Van Hoepen (1915) and Charig (1967); and to Pedeticosauria by Walker (1970).
