Astrodapsis merriami was named by Anderson (1905).

It was recombined as Scutella merriami by Clark and Twitchell (1915) and Kew (1920); it was recombined as Echinarachnius merriami by Grant and Hertlein (1938); it was recombined as Vaquerosella merriami by Durham (1955) and Stadum and Finger (2016).
