Taxonomy
Sonneratioxylon preapetala was named by Awasthi (1969). It is not extant. Its type specimen is BSIP 35941, a wood. Its type locality is Chinnakottaikuppam, which is in a Neogene fluvial-lacustrine horizon in India.

It was corrected as Sonneratioxylon preapetalum by Srivastava (1991) and Wheeler et al. (2017).
