Taxonomy
Meleagris was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type is Meleagris gallopavo. It is the type genus of Meleagridae.
It was assigned to Meleagrididae by Wetmore (1956); to Meleagridae by Hay (1930), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1962), Wilson (1967) and Shoshani et al. (1989); and to Phasianidae by Hay (1902), Lambrecht (1933), Carroll (1988), Emslie (1992), Parmalee (1992), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Wang et al. (2013) and Clements et al. (2017).
