Palaeocryptonyx was named by Depéret (1892). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Perdicidae by Gaillard (1908); to Odontophoridae by Lambrecht (1933); to Phasanidae by Alcover (1989); and to Phasianidae by Carroll (1988) and Bedetti and Pavia (2013).
