Taxonomy
Nyctosauridae was named by Hay (1902) [Definition: All pterosaurs more closely related to Nyctosaurus gracilis than other pterosaurs (Kellner 2003 ; p.121)]. Its type is Nyctosaurus.

It was reranked as the subfamily Nyctosaurinae by Williston (1903), Hay (1930), Kuhn (1946) and Kuhn (1966); it was reranked as the unranked clade Nyctosauridae by Bennett (1989) and Fernandes et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Pterosauri by Hay (1902); to Pteranodontidae by Hay (1930) and Kuhn (1946); to Ornithocheiridae by Williston (1903) and Kuhn (1966); to Pterodactyloidea by Bennett (1989); to Pterodactyloidea by Murry et al. (1991); to Dsungaripteroidea by Cai and Wei (1994) and Andres and Norell (2005); and to Aponyctosauria by Fernandes et al. (2022).
