Taxonomy
Galeocerdo aculeatus was named by Davis (1888). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Coleridge Gully, which is in a Miocene marine horizon in New Zealand.
It was recombined as Carcharias aculeatus by Woodward (1889); it was recombined as Carcharias (Prionodon) aculeatus by Chapman (1918) and Chapman and Cudmore (1924).
