Cylindrosmilia cylindrata was named by Roniewicz (1976). Its type locality is Topalu 4, Dobrogea, Romania, which is in a Kimmeridgian reef, buildup or bioherm reef rocks in Romania. It is the type species of Cylindrosmilia, Cylindrosmilia, Cylismilia.
It was recombined as Cylismilia cylindrata by Roniewicz (1988).
