Aramornis was named by Wetmore (1926). Its type is Aramornis longurio.

It was assigned to Aramidae by Wetmore (1926), Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956); and to Gruidae by Carroll (1988).
