Grus was named by Brisson (1760). It is extant. Its type is Ardea grus. It is the type genus of Gruidae, Gruinae, Gruioidea.
It was assigned to Gruiformes by Bickart (1990); to Gruinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Mayr (2005) and del Hoyo et al. (2014); and to Gruidae by Hay (1902), Lambrecht (1933), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1962), Carroll (1988), Emslie (1992), Parmalee (1992), Mlikovsky (2002) and Clements et al. (2017).
