Bathyopsidae was named by Osborn (1898).

It was reranked as the subfamily Bathyopsinae by Wheeler (1961); it was reranked as the tribe Bathyopsini by Schoch and Lucas (1985).

It was assigned to Pantodonta by Hay (1902); to Uintatheriidae by Wheeler (1961); and to Uintatheriinae by Schoch and Lucas (1985).
