Taxonomy

Gastornis was named by Hébert (1855). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Diatrymidae by Carroll (1988); and to Gastornithidae by Zittel (1890), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1960), Harrison and Walker (1977), Martin (1992), Mlikovsky (2002), Mayr (2007) and Bourdon et al. (2014).
