Eudocimus was named by Wagler (1832). It is extant. It was considered unknown by Emslie (1995).
It was assigned to Threskiornithinae by Wetmore (1956) and Emslie (1995); to Plataleidae by Carroll (1988), Emslie (1992) and Olson and Rasmussen (2001); and to Threskiornithidae by Cracraft (1972), Olson (1981), Morgan (1994), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017).
