It was reranked as the superfamily Cynoidea by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Carnivora by Flower (1883); to Fissipedia by Hay (1902); and to Caniformia by Wang and Tedford (1992), Wang (1994), Wang et al. (1999), García (2008) and Tedford et al. (2009).
