Megapaloelodus was named by Miller (1944).
It was synonymized subjectively with Palaelodus by Mlikovsky (2002).
It was assigned to Paloelodidae by Howard (1955) and Wetmore (1956); to Phoenicopteridae by Miller (1944), Miller (1950) and Carroll (1988); and to Palaelodidae by Wetmore (1960), Brodkorb (1961), Mourer-Chauviré (2008) and Tambussi et al. (2023).
