Cerorhinca was named by Bonaparte (1828). It is extant. Its type is Alca monocerata.
It was assigned to Alcinae by Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956); to Fraterculini by Smith et al. (2007) and Smith (2011); to Aethiinae by del Hoyo et al. (2014); and to Alcidae by Howard (1968), Olson (1985), Carroll (1988), Chandler (1990) and Clements et al. (2017).
