Taxonomy
Pinguinus was named by Bonnaterre (1790). It is not extant. Its type is Alca impennis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Alca by Mlikovsky (2002).

It was assigned to Alcidae by Carroll (1988); and to Alcinae by Hay (1930), Olson and Rasmussen (2001) and del Hoyo et al. (2014).
