Cunninghamia was named by Brown. It is extant. It is the type genus of Cunninghamioideae. It was considered monophyletic by Gadek et al. (2000) and Ahuja and Neale (2002).
It was assigned to Taxodiaceae by Ozaki (1974) and Liu et al. (1996); and to Cunninghamioideae by Gadek et al. (2000) and Ahuja and Neale (2002).
