Taiwania was named by Hayata (1932). It is extant. It is the type genus of Taiwanioideae. It was considered monophyletic by Gadek et al. (2000).

It was assigned to Taiwanioideae by Gadek et al. (2000) and Ahuja and Neale (2002).
